Any update on the tank for us? Please share some of the master tank
By the way, i found little of little something that makes it all clear when it comes to your outstanding tanks...
"Our President uncle Stan won the aquascaping competition in 2007 Aquarama, Singapore. He is represent Malaysia as well as MAC"
Congrats for that one,

Re: Restart of my 7.5ft
Oops, secret's out. Thanks Danne, I thought the competition was a good experience. I didn't think I'd win it but what I noticed was that by the time the public saw the tank the plants were already 1/2 dead. I overdosed on the CO2 pills. LOL.
Anyway, I've been doing this for some time now so I must say it's rewarding and a lot to learn. It's almost like learning biology + chemistry + art . Surely if you lack one of those, it's takes longer to achieve a nice tank. I started planted tanks a few months after I picked up discus in 2000. For me it took forever till I found planted forums like AQ, APC, TPT. We didn't really find anything good locally so we started our own forum-MAC in 2006. The 1st planted competition I entered was for APC's worldwide one in 2005. I got 2nd place and USD200. That was fun because it was totally unexpected. ADA competition is the one to aim for...
About the 7.5ft tank, it looks the same because there's no nutrients supplied to the plants...
This tank's not meant to be a planted tank really. [the Philippine ferns are hardy but I don't expect them to last another month] The fishes are getting fatter though. I'll shoot some pics of the fish perhaps. I need more flashes for the full tank shot, the tank is huge!

Re: Restart of my 7.5ft
Hi Poddan, Sorry out topic but there's details here. http://www.my-mac.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5024
Typically, a competition standard tank can be done as fast as 3 months time or take as long as 2-3 years, depending on the type of plants and also layout. Faster speedier stem plants or slow growing ferns, crypts and mosses. Zen type layouts can be done as quick as 2 months + as hairgrass can grow very fast in my experience. Just put in the rocks, soil and plug in everything, in two months + ta daaa! No it's not that simple of course- it takes months to find the right rock sometimes or have to keep looking till you find it!
Very small tanks-nano tanks can be ready for competition faster as there's less decisions to make. Are you interested to join? aquascaping is fun. Less work than discus... More things to learn as well and more toys...

Hi Stan
When you have a moment could you expand on your filtration specifics?
Thanks

Re: Restart of my 7.5ft
Hi Doug,
Filtration is undergravel pipes from Azoo that's meant for a 4ft tank, it's hooked up to a small powerhead to draw water through the pipes and oxygenated the sandbed to keep it from being anaerobic. It's using the sand to let the BB[beneficial bacteria to colonise]
I've also got another powerhead that's pushing water into a top filter box that about 5 liters in volume with segregated chambers for different media, fine wool, ceramic pipelets, eheim media.
Other than that, I've also got water coming in from a float ball device. What happens is that when I use water from this tank to flush my two smaller discus tanks via a hose that has a tap on the end, new water comes in from the float ball device, effectively replenishing the large tank with water from my house water tank. In between this is another 50 liter plastic tub with multi chambers that the house water tank feeds via a float ball. Here I've put an airstone to release any free chlorine/reduce it. All done with gravity.
So- house water tank>float ball 50Liter tub>7.5ft tank>smaller grow out fish tank.
As you can see, I've deliberately understocked the 7.5 ft tank to keep the water good for the two smaller grow out tanks.
I've also plumbed separately 4 other tanks with taps to drip directly from the 50 liter tub.
So that's the gist of my fish room plumbing. Hope i haven't confused you.

Re: Restart of my 7.5ft
LOL not at all it is exactly what I thought including re stocking levels, I just wanted to hear from the man that planned it.
Have you found that you need to disturb the sand much in cleaning processes?

Re: Restart of my 7.5ft
Ok, I had to reread 2 times what I typed to make sure I understood it myself.
I've no need to disturb the sand bed yet as it's a pretty new setup, I'll probably introduce some kuhli loaches in the near future. I've got a few in the exile tank in the porch.
Perhaps some light vacuuming with a gravel vacuum in a couple of months but nothing drastic. I expect this setup to last at least another year.
