My new Heckels

Post by Dan S » 24 May 2009, 19:45

Hello,

At long last I finally found what I was looking for, some lovely Nhamunda Heckels. They are about 3.5" long, there is 14 of them and they are in my 750l tank along with some Rummy Nose Tetras, Corys and some L134's. These pics where taken about a week after me getting them and they seem to have settled in well.

Hope you like them and sorry the videos and photos arent as sharp as they should be, Im getting used to the lower light levels.

Hello,

Thanks for the kind comments.

Hello Lennart,
Yes I agree Heckels are popular at the moment, there has been quite a few available for sale here in the UK over the last 6 months which is unusual, normally you struggle to find any here at all, Ive been looking for the last 2 to 3 years for good quality fish. As for breeding, I can only dream but your right with so many people keeping them maybe someone will get a pair going.

Hello Poddan,
Water parameters are Ph5.5 at the moment although they where Ph6 when I first got them and I will lower this further over the next few months down to Ph5. TDS 45ppm, Temp 29oC, Nitrites and ammonia 0, Nitrates around 5 - 10.
At the moment Im changing between 50% and 70% a day. The water is RO water that is then run over peat and almond leaves and I use mineral salts to set the parameters.

Hello Ouscazz,
Your lovely video of your Heckels feeding frenzy got me videoing again, heres mine after some bloodworm.

first of all Nice fishes, but i think some of them are wild crosses, the blue pattern is a litle bit to like the Blue diskus. But they are realy nice fishes.

Hello Gep,

Thanks for the kind comments.

As for whether they are Heckel or Heckel crosses Im not sure what to say, I have taken the word of the supplier that they are Nhamunda Heckels, Hudson from HEK Discus supplied them to a guy I know well in the UK so I trust the source.
I do think 1 of them is a Mari Mari Heckel, in the shipment Hudson sent over there where both Nhamunda and Mari Mari and I think 1 got mixed up in the tanks at this end.

Although I have Heiko's book, Im not particular good at identification and being new to Heckels is making it harder.

Maybe Hudson or Heiko if they are on here sometime in the future may comment?

I believe that is normal for heckels to cross white blue diskus in the wild, i also believe that catch-men spreed fish from plays to plays, by accedant ore to make wild crosses.
